In times of major upheaval, all of society is involved, including religion. The result is an all-encompassing angst. The agitation in politics, economics and social structure only heightens the sense of fear and displacement in and concerning religion. That’s what is happening to us right now. That’s what we’re feeling and being discomforted by at the bank, the ballot box and the church.
A look at history can be very enlightening and also very reassuring as it teaches us that we’ve been here before. In fact, we’ve done this about once every 500 years since the change from BCE (before common era) to CE dating. But gaining a long view and being thereby reassured is only one part of the process. We must also look at what we are to do now; how we can not only survive but thrive, and how we meet our obligations to the Kingdom of God in a time of formative and formidable upheaval that has been referred to as nothing less than a tsunami, which is quite a storm.
