Girls’ Choir
The St. Cecilia Girls’ Choir (for girls in grades 3-12) was formed in 1947 and has long been recognized as an outstanding choral ensemble in Fairfield County.
What are the Music Program Requirements?
The St. Cecilia Girls’ Choir is composed of three groups: Novices (all new singers, usually 3rd – 4th graders), Kantori (3rd – 8th graders) and Teens (9th – 12th graders). Music training begins with novices, who rehearse on Wednesday from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. After approximately one year, novices can formally join the Kantori Girls’ Choir, which rehearses on Monday from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm and Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 7:15 (includes dinner). After 8th grade, girls may join the Teen choir.
What are the Responsibilities of a Girl Chorister?
Girl choristers are responsible for attending rehearsals twice a week, and singing Sunday morning services at 9:00 am during the school year. Choristers are also expected to sing for the various Evensongs, concerts and tours. Choristers are not required to sing during school holidays, although girls earn a bonus allowance for participation. The development of a girl chorister from Novice to Teen chorister builds a unique set of skills beyond musical training. Teen choristers accept responsibility in helping younger girls grow into vital members of the choir community. They perform leadership roles at choir camp and serve as role models for the Novice and Kantori girls.
