“Renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at their Baptism.” (BCP 418)
Confirmation is a rite during which those who have been baptized make a mature commitment to Christ and affirm their Christian faith with the laying on of hands from a bishop. Those who have already been baptized come before the bishop to renew the baptismal promises made on their behalf by the parents, godparents and congregation present at their baptism. At the laying on of hands, the bishop prays to God asking for Holy Spirit to empower and sustain the confirmands.
Christ Church Greenwich seeks to serve the people of God by providing spiritual nourishment for all who journey to find a sacred home for worship, personal growth, service and community. In addition to this nourishment we also seek companions in our journey of faith at all ages. It is our desire to share with youth not only how God has acted through God’s people in history, but also how God continues to be present with us today in the sacraments, in our common life in the church and as we seek to live out our baptismal covenant in the world – seeking and serving Christ in all persons, loving God and neighbor. Our program informs youth about the Christian faith, helps shape the spiritual lives and provides safe places for lively discussion, experience of different ministries and opportunities to form relationships with each other and the church in Christian fellowship. The confirmation class sessions are lively, fun and engaging with a strong theological foundation and a willingness to enter into challenging questions and discussions of faith, ministry and life.
This year, Christ Church Greenwich’s confirmation program will run September through May. Our program for this year will kick-off on Sunday, September 23rd during the 9:15am worship service with an introductory confirmation session immediately following. Classes will take place two or three times a month meeting for an hour and a half on Sunday afternoons and requires attendance at a weekend retreat (Friday evening-Sunday afternoon) during the fall. The course curriculum will cover the sacraments (with an emphasis on Baptism and the Eucharist), the Bible, the Book of Common Prayer and the Anglican/Episcopal tradition as well as an emphasis on Christian life in the Body of Christ both within the church and out in the world. Students are also required to complete a certain number of service hours within Christ Church Greenwich ministries and in service of the broader community.
More details regarding registration, requirements, the scheduling of classes and the retreat will be provided soon. Please contact The Rev'd Jenny Owen, Curate and Youth Minister, for more information.
For information regarding confirmation of teenagers (9th grade and above) and adults, please contact Jenny or another member of our clergy staff.
